Make chocolate hearts without molds sounds complicated but is incredibly easy!
Why is it that at Valentine’s we are willing to pay the silliest amount of money for chocolate because it comes in the shape of a heart?
Worst still is that the quality of chocolate that these hearts are made of is sometimes quite nasty. It is easy and inexpensive to make a heart shaped chocolate without any special molds or tools. It will look like a handmade heart from a high end chocolate shop.
You can do this with dark chocolate as shown here, or milk chocolate, as we show in the instructions, or even white chocolate. (White chocolate melts at a much lower temperature).

Instructions
When you make chocolate hearts without molds it starts with a simple piece of paper. Fold a piece of scrap paper in half and cut out half a heart shape the size you want. When you open the paper you will have a full heart. Use a small tray or cutting board that will fit into your freezer. Tape the heart to the tray and put a piece of plastic wrap on top of this and tape the wrap to the sides so it will stay flat.
Let it cool for a minute. Pour it into a plastic sandwich bag and close the bag with a twist tie.
Snipe off a corner of the bag. The chocolate will start to flow very quickly.
Outline the heart with the chocolate. The larger the hole in the bag the thicker the line of chocolate will be. Do not drag the chocolate on the plastic but let it flow from about a inch above. You will have to work quickly.
If the chocolate in the plastic bag has hardened you will have to remove it and remelt it.
Pour the chocolate into the middle of the outline and spread it out to the edges with either the end of a knife or a spoon
Put this in the freezer for 15 minutes or until it is completely solid.
Remember if you make any mistakes you can just pop the chocolate back into the microwave to re-melt it or (sigh) you could eat it yourself.
Once you have mastered doing this with dark and milk chocolate you could try melting a little bit of white chocolate while the other chocolate is still soft and swirl it in to give it a marbled effect.
